Procedure.
1. Hello everybody. I’m very glad to see you. My name is Svetlana. I’m your new English teacher. How are you today? (звезды)What date is it today?
Tell me please, where do you live? Do you think your town is a good place to live in? What other places do you know here in Russia or abroad? OK.
Look at the screen and tell me if you have ever heard the names of these cities? Now repeat them after me:
Atlanta, GA Boston,MA
Dallas, TX Elizabeth, NJ Lexington, KY
Do you know anything about them? Do you want to know? I hope you do. What will be the theme of our project, by the way? My suggestion is “Choose a city”.

So let’s look at the wonderful images of these cities.
Now look at the whiteboard. You can see some images of the cities on it. Now the task is: get into small groups and try to guess where each town is.

Put the names of these cities up on the board and ask students to get into small groups and share any information they know about the cities. If you have images of the cities you could also hand these out or show images using a projector .
Boston,MA Dallas, TX Lexington, KY
Atlanta, GA Elizabeth, NJ
Once they have a had a few minutes to discuss, get the students to call out information to you and write any information they give you up on the board (at this stage accept information even if you know it is incorrect).
3. You know, we are going to live and work in one of these cities for a year. Now, get into small groups and think about the things you would like to know about each city before you decide which one to go.
I’d think about the following: climate, geographical location, type of housing, job possibilities and things to do and see. And what are your criteria?
(Investigate + Exchange)
Now tell the students to imagine that they are going to live and work in one of those cities for a year. Tell the students to work in groups and think about things they would like to know about each city before they decide which one to go to.
The things students may think of could include: standard of living, job possibilities, type of housing, things to do and see, climate, geographical location (distance from sea, mountains), family connections with a place, language etc.
Once they have had time to think of a few criteria, get the students to share their ideas with the class and write a few of the most important ones on the board.

4. I’ll give you one city each to research and find out as much information about it as you can
Now all the students that looked at each city get into groups to share information about the city (Atlanta + Atlanta+ Atlanta etc.)
(Investigate + Exchange + Interact)
Now give each student one city each to research and tell them to find out as much about it as they can. Use computers or other information resources in your school.
After they have had time to research, put the students into groups. Put all the students that looked at each city in a group to share information about the city (e.g. all students that researched Dallas should share the information they have etc.)
(Exchange)
Once they have had time to share information, put the students into groups of 5, with one person to represent each city in each group. They should then tell each other about the city they researched and try to convince the other students that it is the best place to live.
5.Now create a small poster about the city you research and a presentation.
(Create)
Ask the students to create a small poster about the city they researchand a presentation.
5. Do not hesitate to ask for any help while working at the project.
Ask the students not to hesitate to ask for any help while working at the project.
6. And now present your projects about the cities. After the presentation we will vote on which city you think would be the best one to live in for a year. Let’s vote. Where would you go?.... So we think that the best place to live in for a year is …
(Present)
Give the students plenty of time to do this. Once they have had their discussions, have a class vote on which city they think would be the best one to live in for a year.
7. Now a challenge. My American friends want to go to Russia and live in here for a year too. Which Russian cities would you recommend to them? Think about as many Russian cities as you can at home.
(Develop)
Think about as many Russian cities as you can which you would recommend for living to your American friend.
Everybody got excellent marks today. Thanks for the participating in the project. Good-bye.
